Dear Family and Friends:
This letter is directed to those of you who have been indirectly affected by their loved ones who are addicted to illicit drugs. There is a new movement where traditional treatment and 12 step programs are being scrutinized throughout our country. Some of this may be the result of high profile people using rehab for all the wrong reasons.
The government has seized this opportunity to introduce a new form of treatment known as MAT or Medically Assisted Treatment. These programs are a combination of a small amount of therapy combined with (in most cases) a large amount of legal drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine, suboxone, subutex, naloxone The MAT program we are most familiar with is the methadone assisted treatment program. Men and women of all ages who have had a history of opiate abuse, even a short usage history are being pushed into these methadone clinics for a daily dose of methadone and a one on one counseling session once a week.
These clinics are meeting places for addicts who again in most cases just substitute one drug for another. I`m talking about street drugs. Since methadone is an opiate blocker most addicts start shooting cocaine or smoking crack. Some start taking Valium or Xanax to enhance the methadone that they are being prescribed.
The point of this letter is to give your loved one a chance at a full life before resorting to this new form of treatment which has a much lower success rate than clean and sober living combined with a 12 step program such Narcotics or Alcoholics Anonymous.
MAT is a social solution to the problems caused by addiction. There is no medical solution to a spiritual problem (addiction) except total abstinence.
Thank You,
Bobby Hargrove
